100 Green Saucers

Over the last year I've been interested in the idea of ephemerality and how it relates to such a permanent medium like ceramics. I explored this in "100 Blue Cups" back in fall of 2025 which used a single bucket of glaze with progressively more colorant but during the spring of 2026 I wanted to explore this idea more for a ceramics show at Cal State University Long Beach.

Ephemerality in this work lies in two motifs, that being the unreproduceable glazed surfaces and the hand torn edges which act like a unique fingerprint, giving each saucer its own identity. As with "100 Blue Cups" the number 100 was chosen for its anthropological ties such as when referring to a percent of population.

Twenty five unique glazes were mixed based solely on intuition rather than preexisting recipes. Each of these glazes was mixed with the potential to produce green given the right atmosphere in the kiln using combinations of chrome, iron, copper, and nickle. as I glazed the saucers, I progressively mixed more of the glazes together in a bracket so each combination would be unique and impossible to reproduce all while converging into one balanced amalgamation.

The saucers were then fired to cone 10 while fluctuating between oxidation and reduction atmospheres to induce more volatility in the results and push the boundary of predefined labels. the rainbow of saucers which emerged from the kiln were then organized and hung on display at Gatov East Gallery in March of 2026.
